What can I do to help my child when they can manage in one place but not another?
People come here to understand why something in everyday life feels harder, different or more costly than it should โ and what might make it work better.
Short answer
A child may manage in one place and struggle in another because the demands are different.
What this can look like
A child may be relaxed at home and find school or busy activities much harder.
Why it can happen
One setting may have clearer rules, less noise, more choice or a familiar routine. The easier setting does not prove the harder one is a choice or a performance.
What might help
Compare conditions and carry one helpful feature across where possible.
What the research helps explain
Australian autism guidance and research on masking describe meaningful differences in sensory experience, communication, routines, transitions and recovery. Family support should be person-led and context-aware; one trait or difficult day cannot establish autism or AuDHD.
What can vary
Children differ widely in communication, sensory needs, recovery and the support they want. Similar experiences can have other explanations. A public page cannot diagnose a child or prescribe support without understanding their context.
For this situation
For you, carry one helpful feature from the easier place into the harder one.
