What can I do to help my child when they put things off when they cannot do them properly?
People come here to understand why something in everyday life feels harder, different or more costly than it should โ and what might make it work better.
Short answer
Make an imperfect first version safe enough to exist.
What this can look like
They may delay writing because the first sentence has to feel perfect.
Why it can happen
Putting something off can protect a child from the feeling of getting it wrong, while making the task bigger. A rough draft, time box or private practice version can create movement.
What might help
Invite a rough, private first version that is allowed to be changed later.
What the research helps explain
Research and public guidance describe perfectionism and overcontrol by their impact on finishing, flexibility, relationships and quality of life. High standards can be useful; a public page cannot determine whether a child has OCD, OCPD, anxiety or another experience.
What can vary
The same behaviour can have different meanings across development, learning, family life and school. Do not label or shame a child; focus on the cost, their choice, and the support that helps them stay connected and able to learn.
For this situation
For you, praise the brave first step as well as the polished result.
