Regulation
Regulation is what keeps the system inside usable range. It is not about being calm all the time. It is about keeping action, choice, communication and recovery available when stress, emotion, arousal or overload change the state of the system.
Regulation is operating range
People often hear regulation and think calm. Poko uses it more practically. Regulation is the range in which the person can still notice what is happening, choose a move, communicate enough, recover enough and return to the plan. Sometimes useful action needs energy, urgency or emotion. The question is whether the system can use that state without tipping into shutdown, panic, reactivity, collapse or overdrive.
State changes function
Stress, fatigue, sensory load, social pressure, uncertainty and emotional threat can change what the person can access. A task that was simple yesterday may become hard today because the state is different. This is why regulation belongs in a function model. It explains why the same person can perform differently without the difference being laziness or lack of care.
Regulation can be external too
Useful regulation is not only breathing exercises or private self-control. It can be environmental: fewer interruptions, clearer communication, quieter sensory conditions, slower escalation, protected recovery, realistic pacing or a safer way to ask for help. For many neurodivergent people, regulation support has to include the conditions around the person, not only the person's internal effort.
What support tries to protect
The support move is to keep enough capacity online for the next useful action. That might mean reducing ambiguity before a meeting, pausing before a high-stakes reply, setting a decision rule, choosing the smaller version, making recovery non-negotiable or naming overload early. Regulation support works when it arrives before the system has already gone out of range.
How it connects to Recovery
Regulation leads into Recovery because staying inside range all week is not enough if the system never restores. Recovery is how the next cycle becomes possible. Without recovery, regulation becomes constant holding, and performance becomes more fragile over time.
How to use this
- Notice one signal that you are moving out of usable range.
- Choose one external support, not only an internal coping move.
- Protect one pause, boundary or recovery point before overload becomes the only signal.
